SENATOR LUGAR JOINS ETHANOL ACROSS AMERICA ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Washington, DC, March 3, 2005: The Ethanol Across America campaign announced today that U.S. Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) will join the group’s Advisory Committee.

Fellow Senators and Advisory Committee members Ben Nelson (D-NE), Conrad Burns (R-MT), and Tim Johnson (D-SD) welcomed the addition of Senator Lugar who was the original sponsor in 2000 of legislation to create a Renewable Fuels Standard. That legislation was eventually incorporated into last year’s Energy Bill and represents the future path of growth for ethanol in the United States.

Ethanol Across America is a non-profit, non-partisan education campaign of the Clean Fuels Foundation and is engaged in a wide variety of education and outreach activities in support of ethanol. The effort includes a series of workshops, educational publications, and the Ethanol Minute Radio program.

U.S. Senator Ben Nelson said, "Dick Lugar has been a strong supporter of ethanol for more than 30 years. He has been directly involved in creating the modern ethanol industry and we are delighted to have him join us in spreading the word about America’s homegrown alternative fuel."

"America’s insatiable appetite for oil places our nation in a precarious situation of reliability on regions that have become increasingly hostile to us. Bio-fuels such as ethanol increase energy independence and security and would significantly improve rural economies in America and around the world," Lugar said. "I am pleased to join this effort to educate Americans about ethanol and its many benefits."

Senator Lugar also has championed the cause of producing ethanol from cellulosic biomass, which would include municipal and forestry wastes, specialty energy crops and a range of non-grain feedstock. "The need to fully harness the power of biomass in our technologically advanced society is paramount. We also must place greater emphasis on the development of commercially viable cellulosic ethanol," he said. "The Ethanol Across America program provides the opportunity to do so."

Senator Nelson indicated that the renewable fuels standard is likely to again be a key component in comprehensive energy legislation that Congress will take up again this year. "Passing an Energy Bill is a priority issue. Ethanol Across America has been very effective in educating the public on the importance of expanding our fuel supplies, and having Dick Lugar on our team is going to help us tremendously. "
